Opt-in is the prior, free and explicit agreement a person gives to accept receiving commercial messages.
Going deeper
Opt-in names the agreement gathered upstream from the person concerned. It is meant to be free, specific, informed and unambiguous: a pre-ticked box or a consent buried in general terms does not count.
In France, canvassing an individual by SMS rests on this foundation: without prior, provable consent, the send falls out of line. And it's up to the sender to provide proof of the consent.
