In brief
An MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) is an operator that sells plans without owning antennas, renting the network of an infrastructure operator.
Going deeper
A virtual operator runs its offers, its billing and its customer service, but leans on the antennas of a network operator. In France, MVNOs borrow the coverage of Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom or Free Mobile.
On the user's side, the difference is mainly commercial: the numbers remain the usual 06 and 07, the coverage is that of the host network, and sending as well as receiving SMS work identically. An SMS sent to an MVNO subscriber therefore arrives exactly as it would to any French line.
