How do I know if my SMS was received?
Acceptance of the send and actual receipt: two different things.
The gateway confirms the message was accepted, not that it was displayed on the phone: there is no delivery receipt. The absence of an error doesn't guarantee it was read.
The service confirms that your message was accepted for routing. However, there's no read receipt indicating that the recipient opened it.
The answer in detail
After confirming, you get a send confirmation: the message has gone out to the gateway and then to the mobile network. That's the guarantee that the request was accepted.
Actual receipt then depends on the recipient's network and phone (coverage, phone switched off, full memory…). Since the message goes out from a shared gateway, no return comes back to you automatically — no "delivered" or "read".
If receipt confirmation is essential, plan a return channel in the text so the recipient can, if they wish, let you know they've read it.
Concrete examples
›Send confirmation
The form indicates that the message was accepted for routing.
›No read receipt
You don't receive a "read" notification; add a return channel if needed.
Takeaway
Send confirmation yes, read receipt no; add a return channel if proof matters.
